Fernando Alonso has lavished praise on Nico Hulkenberg, calling the German one of the “best drivers on the grid.”
Hulkenberg has been one of the stars of the second half of the season, scoring points in five of the last seven races, with a best finish of fourth at the Korean Grand Prix a stand-out performance.
Alonso, who battled with the Sauber man throughout last weekend’s United States Grand Prix, before ultimately beating the 26-year-old to fifth place at the finish, has spoken out in praise of the German, adding that he hopes that he will be rewarded for his impressive performances with a seat at a competitive team in the future.
Speaking ahead of the Brazilian Grand Prix, Alonso said: “For me Nico is one of the best drivers on the grid. I said that three years ago, and now everyone seems to have discovered him.
“He is doing a great job, [which] I think is no surprise – he was doing an amazing job [in 2010 with Williams],” added the Spaniard. “Getting pole position here [in Brazil], in difficult conditions, was a sign of his talent.
“Hopefully we see him in a competitive car in the future.”
Hulkenberg has long flirted with a move to Lotus, with the Enstone-based squad making it clear that he is their first choice to partner Romain Grosjean in 2014, but the German could still miss out on the seat if the much delayed financial deal with Quantum Motorsports fails to materialise.
Despite this uncertainty, Hulkenberg is believed to have a number of other options open to him for next season, with offers from both Sauber and Force India reportedly on the table for 2014.
