Nico Rosberg topped the opening practice session of the 2015 season in Australia.
The 2014 runner-up set the pace with a lap of 1:29.557 on the medium tyre, in a session dominated by the two Mercedes team-mates.
Lewis Hamilton was second in the sister W06 Hybrid, just +0.029 shy of Rosberg, to ensure the reigning champions ended the first session of 2015 with a 1-2.
Valtteri Bottas was third for Williams, over a second shy of Rosberg’s session topping time, but ahead of Formula 1 rookie Carlos Sainz Jr. in the Toro Rosso.
Sebastian Vettel ended his first official practice session with Ferrari fifth, with 17-year-old Max Verstappen sixth in the second of the Toro Rossos.
Felipe Massa completed 19 laps on route to seventh, ahead of Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen.
Pastor Maldonado was ninth in the Mercedes-powered Lotus, while Daniel Ricciardo rounded out the top ten for Red Bull after a spin at Turn 13.
The two Force Indias were 12th and 13th, as the team concentrated on mileage as it plays catch up with its delayed car.
